Desiderio da Settignano Saint Helena Bronze Bas Relief Plaque

Woodcliff on the Hudson

$ 1,250.00

Desiderio da Settignano, real name Desiderio de Bartolomeo di Francesco detto Ferro (c. 1428 or 1430 – 1464) was an Italian sculptor active during the Renaissance. This copper bronze depicts a young woman glancing down. Toledo Museum of Art has a version in Pietra Serena and they refer to her as Saint Helena, Empress. Other museums have versions in white marble or Pietra Serena and refer to her as a young Virgin Mary.  This is the only version I've ever seen in bronze. I included a photo of a version done in marble as is more commonly found. The bronze version is also the only one I've seen that has the details in the background and in the hair as the medium is better suited for such fine work. A classic beauty.
